Mod Ultimate Solution

You have been directed to this page because you reported a game problem that no one else has reported. In general this means that the problem is local to your install: if it were a problem with the mod's logic then other mod users would have the same problem. Even without any mods installed, BG2 sometimes "degenerates" and strange things happen. This happens rarely but often enough to encourage me to write the steps down once and for all (say, about 40 times total).

Fortunately, there is a method that solves all such problems 99% of the time.

Unfortunately, it takes a few minutes.

Here is the method:

  1. Copy the file DIALOG.TLK and the folders SAVE and MPSAVE to a safe location (like the Windows Desktop).
  2. Make a note of all mods you have installed.
  3. Delete your entire BG2 installation (since you backed up your saved games you won't lose anything here).
  4. Reinstall BG2. Do a full install if possible.
  5. Take your backup copies of DIALOG.TLK and SAVE and MPSAVE and copy them back into your main BG2 folder. This should overwrite the versions that are already there.
  6. Download the latest version of all of the mods you had installed before from their main websites (e.g., here).
  7. Re-install all of those mods.
  8. Run BG2 and load up your old saved game. The problem *should* be fixed.

This technique fixes almost all "random" or "local install" problems (i.e., problems reported by only one person when many others have used the mod and not encountered that problem) associated with Infinity Engine games (with or without mods). Sometimes your game data files (BIFF files) or your override folder can become corrupted. This can happen because of a random hard drive problem or because of a problem while installing a mod. Starting fresh with a clean BG2 install almost invariably fixes such problems.

Good luck!
